History of Home Openers for the Colorado Rapids 1996-2022

Hurrah, hurrah, and hallelujah to the soccer gods, for the MLS schedule for 2023 has landed, and we note that the Colorado Rapids start the 28th season with a testing trip to Seattle Sounders on February 26th, while their home opener is against Sporting Kansas City on March 4th.

The Rapids began their disappointing 2022 campaign with a lackluster 3-0 loss at eventual double winners LAFC, before handing Atlanta United a defeat by the same scoreline to get their home games off to a winning start.

Indeed, the Rapids historically start strong at home. In the previous 27 seasons, they have lost just four of their home openers, boasting a record of 16-4-7.

The numbers are even more impressive for home openers played at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park, with the first being a 2-1 win over D.C. United in 2007. In all, they are 10-2-4 in Commerce City, with those losses coming to Philadelphia Union in 2013 and newcomers Austin FC in 2021.

Players to score for the Rapids in multiple home openers include Omar Cummings (4), Andre Shinyashiki (3), Dominique Badji, Marcelo Balboa, Terry Cooke, Wolde Harris, Drew Moor, and Jamie Smith (all 2).

Moor's two goals in home openers came eight years apart, either side of a stint in Toronto, and both were game winners, against Columbus Crew in 2012 and Orlando City in 2020.

Over the years there have been repeat visitors for the Rapids' first home game of the season. LA Galaxy has played a part in the home opener on four occasions, while Columbus Crew and Portland Timbers have been involved three times apiece.

The Timbers played their first-ever MLS game in a Rapids home opener, losing 3-1 at DSGP in 2011, with former Colorado favorite John Spencer as their head coach. The team from the Rose City was also in town for one of the more memorable home openers of recent times, when Shinyashiki netted late on for 10-man Rapids in a dramatic 3-3 draw in 2019, with the stadium under a blanket of snow.
